WATER FILTER PROJECT
- Cambodia Village Outreach is a committed holistic ministry. We aim to meet the physical need by providing long-lasting water filters to families in rural Cambodia and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ, making disciples and multiplying believers. These filters serve as a catalyst for ongoing relationships with local villagers, enabling us to follow up with, evangelize, disciple, and nurture new believers.
- We are also partnering with local churches, pastors, missionaries and other organizations to provide water filters for local believers and others within the village while sharing the Gospel. As a ministry, we want to use this amazing opportunity to not only support the local church, but to give them opportunities to reach out to their own neighbors and share the Gospel.
HOW WE DO IT
1. Village Assessment
- First, our team completes a community assessment in each village with the village chief, local pastors/missionaries (if any), organization and/or local believer to determine how many household filters will be required in that area.
- After assessment, those who are most in need will be invited to a water filter distribution.
- Water filters are then ordered locally from iDE’s social enterprise organization based on the number from the assessment and the availability of funds received from the donors.
"In Cambodia, untreated water and poor sanitation cause an estimated 10 million cases of diarrhea and 10,000 deaths each year, mostly in rural areas among children under the age of five. Diarrhea and other waterborne diseases impose a heavy economic burden due to healthcare expenses, lost labor productivity, and missed school days for children.
iDE designed the Super Tunsai ceramic water filter to solve this problem. It is affordable, safe, effective, and beautiful.
The ceramic filters have been shown through laboratory testing to remove at least 99.99 percent of bacteria from water. The core of the water filter is a porous ceramic pot, rather like a large flower-pot. This is impregnated with silver nitrate. When the pot is filled with untreated water, the water can pass through the microscopic pores but bacteria and other particles are physically blocked. The silver kills any bacteria that manage to penetrate the ceramic. The pot fits snugly into the top of a specially designed plastic container with a lid to protect against recontamination. Each filter can produce up to 30 liters of clean water per day."
2. Distribution & Evangelism Day
- Those who are in greatest need, usually a group of 10-12 villagers, are then gathered for training on why and how to use and take care the filter, here a gospel presentation and to receive their filter. This process is repeated until all villagers in need receive a filter or funds are diminished.
- These resources are a gift to all families, regardless of religion. However, each person who received a water filter for the household must agree to allow our local team member to follow up and visit them in the future.
3. Follow Up
- Each family is visited in the following weeks, months and year. We do this to evaluate if they are correctly caring for the filter as needed to ensure its long-term effectiveness.
- In every visit, a prepared Gospel presentation tool is used as a follow up to the initial presentation of the Gospel first heard at the distribution event.
- We also provide Gospel tracts or the New Testament in their native language—a text Bible they can read and/or a solar-powered audio Bible when appropriate.
4. Discipleship Program
- When any of the water filter recipients responds positively to the Gospel, we begin a in-home "New Life in Christ" discipleship program.
- If this is done through partnering with local Churches or other Christian organizations, new believers are invited to join the Church or the Bible study and discipleship programs.
- The family is then connected with a local body of believers either with a Church that meet in a physical building, a House Church or even on the tarp under the tree.
