From the Streets of Siem Reap to a Life of Hope
The Testimony of John
My name is John. I was born and raised in the beautiful province of Siem Reap, Cambodia in 1988. I am husband, and a father. But for a long time, I was a man lost in the shadows of my own hometown.
The Walls of Resistances
My journey began in 2008 when a friend shared the Gospel with me. I rejected it immediately. In our culture, family is everything, and I wrongly believed that becoming a Christian meant I would stop obeying my parents. I closed my heart because I didn't want to lose my identity.
The years that followed—2009, 2010, and 2011—were the darkest of my life. My own relatives looked down on me, calling me a "loser" and "hopeless" because I was poor. To escape the pain, I tried to find happiness in money. I became a Tuk Tuk driver in Siem Reap, but every riel I earned from driving tourists went straight to alcohol.
I became a slave to the bottle. I spent countless nights sleeping on the street in the trailer of my Tuk Tuk. I hit rock bottom, even doing the unthinkable by soliciting prostitution for foreign guests just to make an extra buck for a drink. I was trying to drown my problems, but the hopelessness only grew.
A Different Kind of Life
God began to pursue me through simple kindness. A pastor asked if I wanted to study English to help my Tuk Tuk business. I went, but when I saw them praying to Jesus, I quit. I was still afraid of this "foreign God."
However, that pastor continued to show me love. He kept booking my Tuk Tuk for his guests, providing me with work and income. I watched these Christians closely. They lived with a peace and joy I had never seen. Then, I met a lady from Australia who hired me to drive her to villages to share Jesus's love. I watched her feed the hungry and give selflessly to my people. I saw a sincere heart that wanted nothing in return. For the first time, I wanted to know who this Jesus was.
The Creator of Cambodia
She gave me a Bible, and I opened it to the very first verse:
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." — Genesis 1:1
In that moment, my eyes were opened. Jesus is not a foreign God. He is the Creator of the sun, the stars, the water, and the Khmer people. He is the Universal God. In 2012, I surrendered my life to Him.
Transformation and Trials
My life began to transform, but the road was not easy. I still struggled with alcohol until God spoke to my heart. I began studying the Bible, and when I was encouraged to go to University, I worried about the cost. But God provided—I passed the test and received a 70% scholarship.
The day I was baptized, my faith was tested by fire. A close friend was so angry that I wouldn't drink with him anymore that he chased me down the street on a scooter with a samurai sword, trying to kill me. Then, my mother told me to leave her house.
Even though I was cast out, I chose to love her more than ever. I visited her and cared for her as a single mother. In our culture, children must care for their parents, and I wanted to prove that Jesus made me a better son, not a rebellious one. Eventually, she saw the change. She saw that I was no longer a "messed-up" man, and today, she loves and accepts me deeply.
A New Purpose
Eventually, I felt called to leave the city for a remote village with no electricity or clean water. My friends didn't understand, but I had found my purpose: to share the life-changing message of Jesus with those who feel as hopeless as I once did. A verse that gave me strength was 1 Corinthians 10:31: "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." I gave up alcohol forever because I wanted to honor Him.
God’s Faithful Provision
I used to think I was not good enough to ever be a husband or a father. But God is a restorer of lives. In 2024, I married my beautiful wife, Chantrea. Now, we have a son, and together we serve the Lord.
In 2016, God has called me to work alongside Damson and Jenn in the ministry of Cambodia Village Outreach and wife joined latter in 2024 after we were married. Together, we reach, serve, and share Jesus’s love with the people of the villages. I am no longer the hopeless man sleeping on the streets of Siem Reap. I am a child of God, living in the village with my family and my teammates to impact lives for Christ. My story is proof that through Jesus, anyone can find true joy, purpose, and a brand-new life.
